What is the difference between manufactured sand and washed sand
Washed sand is natural silica sand that has undergone washing and grading for foundry use, with a clay content (mass fraction) ≤1.0%. River sand primarily consists of floodplain sedimentary sand, appearing grayish-white or grayish-yellow in color. It comprises layers of medium-fine sand, medium-coarse sand, coarse sand, gravel, and cobble. Its stratigraphic trend follows the riverbed, with the surface layer sloping from the riverbank toward the riverbed and the dip direction sloping from upstream to downstream. River sand has an apparent density of 2580 kg/m³, a bulk density of 1569 kg/m³, and a fineness modulus of 2.89, classifying it as medium sand. Its clay content is 1.34%. It is hard in texture and clear in color, making it an excellent building material.
Manufactured sand refers to sand processed through sand-making machines and other auxiliary equipment. The finished product is more uniform and can be processed into different shapes and sizes according to various process requirements, better meeting daily needs. Professional equipment is required to produce qualified and suitable manufactured sand. A manufactured sand production line consists of equipment such as vibrating feeders, jaw crushers, sand-making machines, vibrating screens, and belt conveyors. Equipment models are combined according to specific process requirements to meet diverse client needs.
Generally, washed sand commands a higher price, though this depends on quality—only premium grades command premium pricing. Compared to washed sand, manufactured sand is simpler to obtain, requiring only a few pieces of equipment to fulfill bulk processing demands. It offers broad investment prospects. Coupled with many regions implementing restrictions on natural sand extraction, manufactured sand is gradually replacing washed sand across various construction sectors.
