How often should the impact plates of an impact crusher be replaced? What factors influence this?
As a common rock crusher, the impact crusher operates in harsh environments where wear parts suffer severe abrasion, frequently leading to various malfunctions. The impact plates of an impact crusher rotate at high speeds with the rotor, striking and crushing materials through impact and abrasion, making them highly susceptible to wear. Factors affecting the service life of impact plates include: the plate material, manufacturing quality, properties of the crushed material, rotor peripheral speed, plate structure, and production output.
1. Plate Hammer Material
Impact hammers are primarily made from wear-resistant materials such as high-manganese steel and chromium alloy steel. Due to variations in manufacturers' heat treatment techniques, mechanical properties differ significantly, leading to substantial differences in plate hammer service life.
2. Plate Hammer Manufacturing Quality
During manufacturing, the weight accuracy of impact hammers must be strictly controlled. Weight variation must not exceed 0.5kg. After installing the impact hammer on the rotor, a static balance test is required. When the rotor stops rotating, it must not swing back more than 1/10 of a circle at any position.
3. Structure and Mounting Method of Impact Hammer
The structure and mounting method of the impact hammer also affect its service life. Currently, most impact crushers secure impact plates with countersunk screws. This method offers simple construction and easy disassembly, eliminating the need to lift the rotor from the machine body during replacement. To overcome this limitation, impact plates are now fixed more securely, though this requires machining the rear groove. Some crushers insert impact plates into rotor slots from the side. Each side features a 1:5 slope, with centrifugal force generated by the hammer's operation providing fixation. In this configuration, the plate hammer ends are also compressed by a pressure plate to prevent movement. This fixing method is unreliable, unsafe during operation, and prone to plate hammer ejection. Another method uses wedge irons: the plate hammer is placed in the rotor groove, and wedge irons with inclined sides are driven into the rotor from the sides to wedge the plate hammer in place. After pre-tensioning the hammer plates, during operation, the plates, wedges, and rotor tighten progressively under centrifugal force. While operation is reliable, disassembly and assembly become extremely difficult.
4. Rotor Peripheral Speed
The rotor of an impact crusher operates at high linear velocity. Equipped with 3-6, or up to 8-10, plate hammers, the time interval between the rotation of consecutive hammers is only a fraction of a second. Within this brief window, only minimal material enters the impact zone as a solid mass. Most material—particularly larger pieces—enters the impact zone with only one end engaged. Consequently, the plate hammer does not strike the material's center of gravity. Instead, the entire material block strikes the plate hammer at an angle. This not only reduces crushing efficiency but also generates sliding friction between the material and the hammer, causing accelerated wear. Furthermore, when powder adheres to the impact surface, friction between the hammer and powder intensifies, leading to even faster wear. To minimize hammer plate wear, the number of hammer plates on the rotor should not be excessive, and the rotor diameter should not be too small. Appropriately increase the height of the hammer plates, and pre-screen the feed material to remove powder, soil, and moisture.
The above factors influence the service life of impact hammers, including hammer material, rotor peripheral speed, hammer structure and mounting method, and manufacturing quality. Users should pay particular attention to these aspects during production operations to prevent malfunctions.
