Analysis of Failure Causes for Gear Wear in Cone Crushers
Hydraulic cone crushers perform secondary crushing in production lines, specifically processing medium-hard materials. During operation, failures such as gear tooth damage, wear, iron jamming, and root cutting of bevel gears may occur. These issues not only disrupt production but also cause direct or indirect economic losses.
1) Potential Causes
Six primary factors contribute to severe gear tooth breakage and wear in hydraulic cone crushers:
① Inadequate protective mechanisms within the cone crusher;
② Feed material containing slag iron exceeding the crusher's design specifications (design requirement: ≤130mm);
③ Material size meets specifications but feed rate exceeds capacity (rated output: 45-120 t/h);
④ Material exceeding maximum iron passage size (65 mm) causes blockage;
⑤ Forced restart under heavy load after cone crusher shutdown due to blockage;
⑥ Mismatch between cone crusher and drive motor (design motor: 110W, 735 rpm).

2) Cause Verification
Identify causes through on-site monitoring and elimination. For example: Field observations revealed that when iron pieces entered the cone crusher, failure to manually release them promptly caused jamming and forced shutdown. This led to material buildup at the feed inlet. To shorten cleanup time, operators repeatedly forced heavy-load restarts before clearing accumulated debris from the inlet and interior. repeatedly forced the motor to start under heavy load. This caused the internal bevel gears to experience repeated overload fatigue and eventually fracture. Additionally, the ability to force a heavy-load motor start indicates inadequate protection mechanisms.
