Da Nang's Port Expansion Is Creating a Specific Kind of Sand Demand

Da Nang is in the middle of its largest infrastructure programme in decades. The Lien Chieu Port project, backed by more than VND 3.4 trillion, is being developed as an international gateway port. The city has allocated VND 5,600 billion for key transport projects in 2026, including the Hoa Lien–Tuy Loan road, the Co Co river bridge, and the western ring road. Residential and industrial zones along the Han River corridor are expanding. Every one of these projects requires sand, and the natural sand that once came from the Thu Bon and Vu Gia river systems is increasingly difficult to extract under current regulations.

Quartz sand is not the first material that comes to mind when construction engineers think about concrete aggregate. But in central Vietnam, quartz sand deposits are accessible, and with proper washing and dewatering, quartz sand meets the specification requirements for concrete, mortar, and precast products. The problem is not the crushing or the grading. It is the water. A screw washer that cannot dewater effectively produces a product that is too wet to stockpile, too heavy to haul economically, and inconsistent in moisture content for batching plants.

Why Dewatering Is the Variable That Decides Whether the Sand Is Saleable

A concrete batching plant buys sand by weight, but it uses sand by volume. If the sand arrives with 18% moisture, the batching plant is paying for water. If the sand arrives with 8% moisture, the same plant can use the material without adjusting its mix design or drying it first. The difference between those two figures determines whether the sand producer can sell to a ready-mix plant or has to discount the product to a road base application.

For quartz sand, the dewatering challenge is specific. Quartz particles are hard and angular, and the fines that pass through the crusher tend to be finer than what a screw washer is designed to capture. If the washer is not configured correctly, those fines stay in suspension, the overflow water carries them away, and the product that comes out of the discharge end is coarser than the specification requires. The plant loses saleable material and produces a product that does not meet the fineness modulus the buyer expects.

What a 90 TPH Screw Washer Actually Needs to Do

A screw washer for quartz sand dewatering performs three functions simultaneously. It washes the material, removing clay and silt that would reduce concrete strength. It classifies the sand, separating the coarser fraction from the fines. And it dewaters the product, reducing the moisture content to a level that allows stockpiling and transport without bleeding water onto the haul road.

For a 90 TPH operation in Da Nang, the machine needs to handle a feed that arrives with variable moisture depending on the season. In the dry season, the feed may be relatively dry and require more water for washing. In the rainy season, the feed may arrive saturated, and the washer‘s dewatering function becomes the bottleneck rather than the washing function. A machine that is specified for average conditions will underperform in both the dry and wet extremes.

The table below gives reference parameters for a screw washer in this capacity class.

The Difference Between a Screw Washer and a Dewatering Screen

A screw washer is not the only machine that can dewater sand. A dewatering screen uses high-frequency vibration to remove water from a slurry, and it can achieve lower moisture content than a screw washer in some applications. The choice between the two depends on what the plant is trying to achieve.

A screw washer is better suited to operations where the feed contains clay that needs to be scrubbed off the sand particles. The rotating screw creates a scrubbing action that a dewatering screen does not. It is also more tolerant of variable feed rates and does not require the same level of feed preparation.

A dewatering screen is better suited to operations where the sand has already been washed and the only requirement is to remove water. It achieves lower moisture content and has a smaller footprint, but it requires a consistent feed and does not handle clay well.

For quartz sand in Da Nang, the most practical configuration is often a two-stage process: a screw washer for the initial washing and coarse dewatering, followed by a dewatering screen to reduce the moisture content to the final specification. This arrangement allows each machine to operate within its design parameters rather than forcing one machine to do both jobs.

What the Equipment Costs in the Vietnamese Market

A 90 TPH screw washer in the Vietnamese market typically falls between USD 8,000 and USD 22,000 depending on spiral diameter, trough length, and drive configuration. A complete dewatering station — including the screw washer, a dewatering screen, a slurry pump, and the connecting pipework — generally runs USD 25,000 to USD 60,000.

The table below gives an indicative breakdown for a two-stage quartz sand washing and dewatering circuit.

Freight to Da Nang‘s Tien Sa Port or the new Lien Chieu Port, inland transport, foundations, and commissioning add a further layer. Vietnam’s participation in the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area means that certain equipment imports may qualify for reduced duty rates, subject to appropriate documentation.

Water Management: The Cost That Does Not Appear on the Equipment Invoice

A screw washer consuming 80–150 cubic metres of water per hour is not a small consumer. In Da Nang, where industrial water supply is metered and the dry season can strain local supplies, the cost of that water adds up quickly. A plant running two shifts consumes 1,280 to 2,400 cubic metres per day, which at current industrial water rates represents a significant monthly expense.

A closed-loop water recycling system changes that equation. The overflow from the screw washer, which carries the fines and the majority of the water, is directed to a thickener. The clarified water is returned to the washer, and the sludge is dewatered and disposed of or sold as a by-product. A well-designed recycling system can recover 80–90% of process water, reducing freshwater intake to the volume lost in product moisture and evaporation.

For quartz sand, the sludge from the thickener often contains fine quartz that can be recovered and sold as a filler material or used in block manufacturing. The recovery of that material partially offsets the cost of the water treatment system.

How OCP Mechanical Company Supports Vietnamese Sand Operations

OCP Mechanical Company has manufactured mining and processing equipment for over 40 years. We supply spiral sand washers, wheel sand washers, dewatering screens, hydrocyclones, vibrating screens, feeders, and complete sand washing plants. Every machine is new. For a 90 TPH quartz sand screw washer for dewatering in Da Nang, our engineering team can review your feed characteristics — particle size distribution, clay content, and seasonal moisture variation — and recommend a configuration that delivers consistent product moisture rather than a machine that works well on paper.

Because we sell direct from our factory, there is no distributor margin in the price. Our technical team works with you on the circuit layout and the water management design rather than handing over a catalogue. And our online customer service team is available 24 hours a day to discuss specifications, provide updated pricing, and help you work out which configuration suits your site.
